Wave drop final game of the season, will play Portland Thorns in first round of NWSL playoffs
The San Diego Wave’s 2025 regular season came to a close with a 2–1 road loss to the Kansas City Current. They finished the year 10-9-7 and 37 points. They will enter the NWSL playoffs as the No. 6 seed.
San Diego started fast, taking the lead in the eighth minute. Dudinha scored her fifth goal in as many games, weaving through Kansas City’s defense before firing off a shot that slipped through goalkeeper Lorena’s legs.
The Wave held the advantage until the 54th minute, when Kansas City’s Debinha curled a free kick from the edge of the box into the net to tie the game. Kansas City then took the lead in the 75th minute on a perfectly timed ball from Haley Hopkins that found Nichelle Prince, who put it in the back of the net to make it 2–1.

San Diego now heads to Portland to face the Thorns in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 9 at 12 p.m. PT on ABC. Despite the loss, head coach Jonas Eidevall expressed confidence in his squad.
“We’re going into the playoffs with a lot of confidence,” he said.
San Diego has experienced plenty of highs and lows this season, climbing as high as third place in the standings while also facing a stretch where playoff qualification seemed uncertain. The Wave have yet to find the consistency they are searching for, and now, with every game a win-or-go-home scenario, they hope to finally lock it in.
Earlier this season, San Diego faced the Portland Thorns twice, with both matches ending in 1–1 draws.
